It's not too late to make a gift for Heart Pledge Day

Giving doctors what they need to save more lives

Doctors at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute provide life-saving care to more cardiac patients—across a larger geographic area—than any other heart institute in Canada.

Your generosity will ensure that some of the world’s best and brightest medical minds have access to the most advanced equipment and technology to save the lives of more patients than ever.

630 CHED will be broadcasting live from the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute on Wednesday, February 24.
Hear from patients and staff about how your support provides world-class cardiac care that changes and saves lives.

Thanks to donors’ generous support, the Maz remains the leading heart institute in western Canada.

Minimally invasive surgery

Dr. Michael Moon, who came to the Maz in 2014, is a specialist in TEVAR – a minimally invasive procedure in which a patient’s aortic heart valve is repaired without major surgery. For patients who are too high-risk to be safely treated with traditional open heart surgery, TEVAR is their only chance at returning home to their loved ones.

It’s vital that Dr. Moon and the expert medical team at the Maz have the highly specialized equipment they need to perform these delicate surgeries.

Innovations in transplantation

Currently, 1 in 3 patients on the lung transplant wait list die while waiting for their new lungs. At the Maz, Dr. Darren Freed and Dr. Jayan Nagendran are developing a procedure to make more organs available for transplantation.

“We’re effectively increasing the number of lungs that are suitable for transplantation so more lives can be saved,” says Dr. Freed. To patients on the waiting list, and their families, community support is critical.

Interventional cardiology

Interventional cardiology at the Maz provides gold standard, non-surgical care to patients with cardiovascular disease. For patients with more than one serious health condition, interventional cardiology can be performed in Canada’s only purpose-built Hybrid Operating Room, where surgeons and cardiologists work collaboratively.

This is particularly beneficial to patients, says Dr. Robert Welsh, Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Head, Cardiac Sciences, and senior cardiologist at the Maz.

“All of that training and all of those skills times two. That’s what excellence at the Maz looks like.”
