Rosenau Has Another Reason to Celebrate Heart Pledge Day

Carl Rosenau, President of Rosenau Transport, used to think he was invincible - until hip replacement surgery led to an unexpected transfer to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

A committed businessman and sports enthusiast, Rosenau is also a long-time University Hospital Foundation donor who once joked about the probability of experiencing a heart attack. ”We are all going to have a heart attack one day…well, guess what? Mine came along a little sooner than I expected!”

While the 2010 Heart Pledge Day Radiothon was broadcasting live from the 2nd floor of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, Rosenau was undergoing life-saving surgery just two floors up.

Though he had downplayed his symptons, an observant, quick-thinking nurse, ensured he was examined; Rosenau was experiencing a myocardial infarction (heart attack). A colleague called in to the radiothon to share Rosenau’s story on air and a flurry of activity followed. Many colleagues and friends of the much-loved local businessman called in to pledge their support - both for Carl and for the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

“It was comforting for my family to know that so many people were cheering me on,” said Rosenau. Funds raised through Heart Pledge Day support important priorities at the heart institute.

The Rosenau family has a long history of giving back to their community – especially to organizations close to their hearts. They are long time supporters of the Festival of Trees and particularly the Festival Gala Event.

“Those involved do fantastic work. The Festival is one of my family’s favourite community events and supporting this tradition is definitely a priority for us.” His company assists by storing some of the Festival’s holiday supplies during the year. In 2011 his wife, Grace, served as a volunteer on the Steering Committee to help organize the Gala Evening.

Rosenau changed his lifestyle after his surgery and says his biggest hobby is now his two year-old grandson. He also now takes the time to enjoy life with his family, golfing in Arizona or swimming in Barbados. “I relax more than I used to…and try to take care of my health…I’m so grateful for the care I received both before and after my heart attack…I have a new lease on life!”
