630 CHED Heart Pledge Day

630 CHED will be broadcasting live from the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute on Thursday, February 23, 2017.

Hear how your support provides world-class cardiac care
that changes and saves lives. And give from the heart!

Heart Pledge Day - live at the Maz!

The Maz provides advanced care to the most complex cardiac patients of all ages,
from across Western Canada – thanks to donor support.

Supporting Western Canada's Leading Heart Institute

Funds raised during Heart Pledge Day have supported such critical needs as:

  • Expanding the cardiovascular intensive care unit – where the sickest of the sick cardiac patients receive world leading care;
  • Buying portable life support equipment for patients who are so sick they would not arrive at the Maz alive without it; and
  • Purchasing a specialized cooling system that protects the brains of heart attack patients by lowering their body temperature.

Without life support, I wouldn't be here

Jolissa DoerksenJolissa Doerksen, 24, was still adjusting to life as a new mom when she and her husband Jeremy, decided to take their baby Jordana on her first camping trip. It was mid May, 2014.

The young family’s trailer, parked outside their home in the community of Blumenort, Alberta near Fort Vermilion (660 kilometers northwest of Edmonton), needed a thorough cleaning after the long winter.

“Being in the country, we knew there was a chance that mice had gotten into our trailer,” said Jolissa.  “Sure enough, they had.”

Within a week of cleaning the trailer, Jolissa had contracted Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome – a deadly respiratory condition acquired through contact with deer mice droppings.

By the time she arrived at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute less than a week later, she was close to death.

Doctors at the Maz immediately put Jolissa on Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS), otherwise known as life support. She remained in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) for two weeks while her body recovered from the hantavirus.

Today, Jolissa is grateful for the people at the Maz, in particular the surgical teams, staff and intensivists in the CVICU.

And for the technology they used to save her life.

“Without that machine, I wouldn’t be here,” says Jolissa, who gave birth to their second daughter, Jerilyn, six months ago. “It’s that simple.”

The Maz currently has two ECLS units. And demand for life support has increased dramatically since they were purchased 10 years ago.

“Those machines saved me,” says Jolissa. “It’s terrible to think what would have happened if that equipment wasn’t available. That’s why it’s so important to support Heart Pledge Day so they can buy two more life support units.”
