A Soldier's Story
Kristopher Schroder was an active, healthy member of the Canadian Armed Forces when, two weeks away from being deployed to Afghanistan for his sixth tour of duty, when he was admitted to the University of Alberta Hospital with flu like symptoms.

Extensive testing revealed a rare heart condition. Kris was treated and eventually returned to the First Combat Engineering Unit at CFB Edmonton. Two years later, in April of 2012, familiar flu like symptoms, and a struggle to breathe, brought Kris back to the University of Alberta Hospital.

“It was just too close to what Kris had experienced before,” remembers Kris’s wife, Carol. “We knew he had a heart condition, and weren’t taking any chances.”

Kris was critically ill and fighting a life threatening infection: he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he spent three days on a respirator and required dialysis to help clear the toxins from his body.

“Kris was unconscious for much of his hospital stay, but I was so aware of the seriousness of his condition – and so thankful for the care Kris received in the ICU,” explains Carol. “The doctors, nurses and support staff are world class.”

After eight days in the ICU Kris was transferred to another area of the hospital, where he continued to receive intensive care and rehabilitation to assist his recovery. On May 14, after only three weeks in hospital, Kris returned home to his family.

“If the University of Alberta Hospital didn’t have the equipment I needed, I might have died,” Kris explains. “Anything that can be provided to the hospital to make it more advanced will help someone recover and get out faster. That’s a good investment in our community.”
