Head Trauma

Severe head trauma is the leading cause of death among 18-45 year old males.

The final phase and centrepiece of the campaign is to build and equip a state-of-the-art Brain Centre that will coordinate care from diagnosis to surgery to rehabilitation. Coordinated care unites all brain-related specialists together. The neurosurgeons, neurologists and neurointensivists all work in the same area of the hospital. The equipment is right there. This team including nurses and rehabilitation specialists will work together in this specialized care environment.

No one procedure, piece of equipment or discovery is going to change the lives of patients with brain conditions, but all of these things together will. That’s why we’re building a Brain Centre that will include:
  • Neuro Intensive Care Unit with private rooms and space for staff and advanced equipment
  • High Intensity Unit with brain monitoring equipment
  • Epilepsy monitoring beds to help detect where seizures are originating
  • Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Observation beds to help minor strokes from becoming major brain attacks
  • Stroke Treatment Unit to closely monitor potential and active brain attacks to minimize brain damage and help patients return to their lives as soon as possible
  • An in-patient rehabilitation space with the latest technology to speed recovery
  • Patient beds with adequate space, natural light, and quiet areas to aid in recovery and healing
