The case for the new Neuro ICU

Brain care at the University of Alberta Hospital has never been better. But there’s still more to do. Having a highly specialized intensive care unit (ICU) for brain patients – where experts with finely honed skills and a singular focus on patients with life-threatening conditions can work together – is critical to saving lives.

The Neuro ICU at the University of Alberta Hospital was built in the mid-1980s and is running at or above full capacity. A lot has changed since then, including advancements in equipment and technology, and innovations in specialized patient care.

To give more critically ill or injured brain patients the best chance to recover as fully and quickly as possible, the new Neuro ICU will include:

• More than twice the number of beds so more patients suffering severe brain trauma, a devastating stroke, aneurysm, spinal cord injury, or any other life-threatening brain condition can receive worldclass intensive care;

• Immediate access to state-of-the-art imaging and monitoring equipment so doctors have up-tothe-moment information at their fingertips for making life-saving decisions;

• Optimized space so the highly specialized, multidisciplinary teams can work together in a supportive environment.

The University Hospital Foundation's Brain Centre Campaign

In 2012, the University of Alberta Hospital opened one of the most advanced brain surgery suites in Canada. That was just the start of the University Hospital Foundation’s  Brain Centre Campaign.

Your generosity will provide brain patients at the University of Alberta Hospital with access to one of the most innovative Brain Imaging and Treatment Units in the country; enable us to recruit and retain top medical minds in neurosciences and research; and create a Brain Centre of international stature.

Our brain is who we are. When it begins to fail, the results can be devastating. That’s why the Brain Centre will address a broad spectrum of brain conditions. So that patients who come to the University of Alberta Hospital from anywhere within our broad catchment area, will get the highest level of coordinated care possible.
