The Shelly L. Mrkonjic ALS Research Fund

Tyler and Frank Mrkonjic present the Prince George Cougars 50/50 winnings to the University of Alberta ALS Team

Shelly Mrkonjic's friends, family and students admired her warm heart and outstanding generosity. This admiration continued when Shelly was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Shelly's husband Frank, and son Tyler, remember how even when she was facing tough challenges, Shelly embraced life, remained positive and cared about others. Sadly, two years after being diagnosed, Shelly passed away at the age of 36.

"It was Shelly’s wish that her tragic battle would be a driving force behind providing ALS patients with hope, and finding a cure for this devastating disease," Frank said.

In 2007, Shelly's family and friends paid tribute to her unwavering spirit by creating the Shelly L. Mrkonjic ALS Research Fund. The fund supports both the ALS Clinic and ALS research at the University of Alberta Hospital.

Shelly's incredible strength and positive attitude throughout her courageous battle was a lasting inspiration to those around her. As well as carrying her memory, Shelly’s family and friends are continuing her legacy of offering hope, and helping others battling ALS.
